GDI Showcases the Competitiveness of Indonesian Product Designs

A total of 45 products that won the title of Good Design Indonesia (GDI) for the 2020-2022 period were exhibited at the M Bloc Design Week event. This exhibition aims to encourage the creativity of designers for export products and increase the love for Indonesian products. The M Bloc Design Week event is part of the M Bloc Festival 2022 series of activities, and will be held from 4 to 16 October 2022.

According to kontan.co.id, Director General of National Export Development Didi Sumedi said, despite the weakening global economic conditions, the quality and design of GDI-winning products can be a source of optimism. He assessed that these products have shown that Indonesian products are able to compete in the global market.

“There are several keys for us to survive and develop our business. One of them is through creativity and innovation as well as the ability to adapt to various conditions. One of them is through product design,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Director of Export Development of Creative Services and Products, Miftah Farid, said that design development can be one of the strategies to increase competitiveness. In addition to producing products that comply with standards and follow market tastes, product designs need to have elements that are able to empower the community and also be environmentally friendly. Product designs that elevate Indonesian cultural values, can also increase competitiveness in the export market.

“This shows how important design development is in the competitiveness of a product to win the competition, especially in the global market. For this reason, the government continues to develop strategies to improve product competitiveness in the global market. One of them is through GDI,” explained Miftah in his opening remarks for M Bloc Design Week (6/10/2022).

GDI is an annual product design competition organized by the Ministry of Trade. This event aims to increase the added value of Indonesian products through innovation, novelty, commercialization, and positive impacts on society and the environment. GDI registration will reopen in early 2023. This event is open to all Indonesian designers.

“It is hoped that with holding M Bloc Design Week, more Indonesian products will be able to compete, both in the domestic and global markets. This is the right step to make Indonesia one of the countries producing products with the best designs,” Miftah added.
