Thrifting Becomes an Opportunity for MSMEs

Buying and selling used fashion products or thrifting has become a trend among young people. This trend turns out to have many positive values, such as affordable prices and environmental friendliness. This trend can be an opportunity for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

According to umkm.kompas.com, Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Sandiaga Uno said thrifting could be a creative economy business opportunity.

“So this thrifting has become a trend that is included in the category of shopping tourism or shopping. There are opportunities for local creative economy actors. We are allowed to sell used goods but are not allowed to import, therefore we must develop the strength of our economic talents,” he explained in The Weekly Brief With Sandi Uno (WBSU) (16/1/2023).

Sandiaga added that this is an open opportunity for creative economy players to build a market similar to a flea market. Especially for domestic used goods. This can be supported by MSMEs that can produce new, unique local fashion products. The combination of trend thrifting and UMKM can drive sustainability fashion.

“With natural dyes, indigo, the use of local labor, especially women, so that the shelf life of this fashion is longer,” said Sandiaga.

He also said that used goods could have a high economic value that would bring in tourists. An example is the Menteng area, which is a tourist destination for antiques.
